VOLUNTEER WITH US!

Thanks for your interest in volunteering with us! Please read this application thoroughly. Feel free to reach out to celeste (she/they) with any questions at celeste@masakhanecenter.org or 973-969-2472 (texts will get seen first).

Masakhane (mahs-uh-kahn-nay) is a Xhosa word that means "let's build ourselves, for ourselves, together". Masakhane is a youth-driven organization providing community-based sexuality education in and around Newark, NJ. Masakhane’s anti-racist, pro-queer & pro-trans approach to sex-positive programming seeks to promote sexual liberation, including the right to pleasure, for marginalized communities.

We are seeking folks age 16-24 to dedicate <10 hours a month throughout 2025 to help build our capacities in Newark and support our online and in-person programs. As a completely volunteer-run organization, Masakhane gets its life force from people like you. This is not a paid / stipend position.

Volunteers will assist with creating educational materials that support in-person and online learning. This will look like creating handouts in Canva, boosting our social media presence on Instagram (and TikTok if it's not banned) @masakhane, and doing behind-the-scenes research to bolster our existing Resources Manual.

Additional - and optional - occasional opportunities may arise for you to come in-person to help out with tabling, flyering, or in-person MC events such as fundraisers.

The 2025 volunteer program will meet monthly on Sundays from February to November, primarily over Zoom, ten sessions total. Volunteers are expected to attend at least 8 sessions to get the full experience. Summer programming (June-August) will be in-person in order to connect with the rest of the Masakhane community, including interns, Board members, and community members; tech permitting, there will be a virtual option for these summer meetings. Meetings will be led by celeste and will consist of coworking and training on a variety of sexuality topics. For a full topic list of potential training topics, click here. You will be expected to continue working your project(s) on your own time and report out at the following meeting. We will be meeting from 12 pm – 2:30 pm EST.

Application deadline: Friday, January 24, 2025. After you apply, you will be invited to an interview between January 27 - 31. Our first meeting/orientation is on February 9th. We can’t wait to meet you!
